The high-energy probability distribution of accretion disc luminosity fluctuations

چکیده

The probability density function of accretion disc luminosity fluctuations at high observed energies (i.e., larger than the peak temperature scale disc) is derived, under assumption that are log-normally distributed. Thin theory used throughout. While log-normal would imply disc's bolometric also log-normal, Wien-like behaves very differently. For example, in contrast to a distribution, standard deviation derived distribution not linearly proportional its mean. This means these systems do follow linear rms-flux relationship. Instead they exhibit intrinsic variance, and undergo what amounts phase transition, which mode (in statistical sense) ceases exist, even for physically reasonable values underlying variance. moments this using asymptotic expansion techniques. A result important interpreting observations predicts fractional variability should increase as frequency increased. will be practical utility quantitatively understanding above their scale, including X-ray tidal disruption events.

Spatial distribution of the accretion luminosity of isolated neutron stars and black holes in the Galaxy

We present here a computer model of the spatial distribution of the luminosity, produced by old isolated neutron stars and black holes accreting from the interstellar medium. We show that the luminosity distributions in the Galaxy have a ring structure, with a maximum at ≈ 5kpc radius.

The Luminosity and Energy Dependence of Pulse Phase Lags in the Accretion-Powered Millisecond Pulsar Sax

Soft phase lags, in which X-ray pulses in lower energy bands arrive later than pulses in higher energy bands, have been observed in nearly all accretion-powered millisecond pulsars, but their origin remains an open question. In a study of the 2.5 ms accretion-powered pulsar SAX J1808.4−3658, we report that the magnitude of these lags is strongly dependent on the accretion rate. During the brigh...

Multiscale probability distribution of pressure fluctuations in fluidized beds

Analysis of flow in fluidized beds, a common chemical reactor, is of much current interest due to its fundamental as well as industrial importance. Experimental data for the successive increments of the pressure fluctuations time series in a fluidized bed are analyzed by computing a multiscale probability density function (PDF) of the increments. The results demonstrate the evolution of the sha...

Accretion disc origin of the Earth's water.

Earth's water is conventionally believed to be delivered by comets or wet asteroids after the Earth formed. However, their elemental and isotopic properties are inconsistent with those of the Earth. It was thus proposed that water was introduced by adsorption onto grains in the accretion disc prior to planetary growth, with bonding energies so high as to be stable under high-temperature conditi...

Luminosity, selfgravitation and nonuniqueness of stationary accretion

We investigate newtonian description of accreting compact bodies with hard surfaces, including luminosity and selfgravitation of polytropic perfect fluids. This nonlinear integro-differential problem reduces, under appropriate boundary conditions, to an algebraic relation between luminosity and the gas abundance in stationary spherically symmetric flows. There exist, for a given luminosity, asy...
